Now That Apop Has Actually Used It: Eliminate FF For Sniper Rifles

Summary (a quick, 2-3 sentence summary):

Per the subject. Upon actually using this weapon Apop has finally admitted that FF on it is basically retarded.


Benefits (How this will benefit the server and game as a whole):

Stops a backline weapon from constantly FFing marines because you typically have a screen of them in front of you at any given time outside of FOB camping.


Details (Description of how you think this would work, the benefits, etc):

If you remain stationary for a full second (i.e. take aim; you get a notification), or are zoomed in, the sniper rifle ignores FF; essentially this is an abstraction of its user precisely aiming the weapon so it doesn't hit friendlies.


Implementation (Optional, if you have an idea how to implement it):

Minor coding changes.

So long as the FF immunity toggles on zoom I think this would be a perfect addtion.

Also isn't this a duplicate of another thread?

I think it should also ignore FF if you're stationary for long enough; prevents you from getting the benefit while running and gunning, which is more the Smartgun's niche.

Also maybe; it's been a long requested change but I haven't seen this come up recently.

+1 , it's annoying when I shoot someone and miss the alien and also annoying when shot by a sniper and then die rapidly. Should be on aim though otherwise it's basically a super high damage smart gun.

MAYBE if it could be a hitscan weapon where there is no travel time you could keep ff since you wouldnt have to worry about travel time and just a clear LOS. Not sure which would be optimal.

+1 Anything that makes a sniper not decap your head off makes it great, i would really like to see this, but only when you are scoped in.

+1 to disabling FF /or/ making the weapon hitscan.

Every time I've taken the M42 as spec it's generally been a frustrating and useless experience. My options end up being:

1. Sit in the back and try to provide cover fire - shoot squadmates in the back because they decide to travel three tiles to the side while the bullet is in flight
2. Try and flank around to get a better angle - killed by xenos because I separated
3. Stop using the scope and go CQC - eeeeeh, no

I hate getting shot in the back by .50, but I'm still tentatively more inclined to go the hitscan route than the no-FF route. Would still mean that the weapon is useless(worse than useless) in the hands of a talentless shitlord, but would generally eliminate the problem of Marines walking into your bullets as they fly. I'm also not exactly sure how the bullet speed compares to other types, but it feels SO SLOW when you're trying to hit anything that has a mind to move every few seconds or so. It'd just FEEL so much more like the high-powered rifle it is with a faster(or instantaneously impacting) round.

Also fixing the thing where if you get disarmed while zoomed in you have to go pick the rifle back up to get to normal vision would be nice, but that's not for here.

Apop brought up FF before, and if it's changed you'll know about it. Denied.

Apparently it wasn't you who made that topic, here's what I posted there: I've had a long conversation with apop about the smartgun's FF features, and that is why there is no longer a switch making it possible to toggle those features. The smartgun is the only spec weapon capable of ignoring friendlies, and that is intentional.

Since then we've also talked about the possibility of having attachments that serve a similar function, but right now it's a no go.

definetly something that makes shooting easier and less hazardous such as the stuff here, NV would encourage lone wolfing which I don't want.

NV won't make a difference to lone wolfing , it's already a long wolf weapon if they have a flare and incendiary rounds. I got to say travel time is by far the main issue with snipers as an alien would move a tile or so when a shot is fired or if there is lag then it completely misses , sniper bullets travel really fucking fast so why a person could move out of the way at 50m range makes no sense.

I think the best solution is actually a compromise between this one, and the one advocating for NV scopes:

Sniper rifles with NV scopes that ignore FF so long as they're zoomed in.

I like this one, although it'd make it a bit more macro-intensive and new-user unfriendly due to the fact people wouldn't know about that so easely (Plus, hard to explain IC).
Zoomed in lowered/no-FF would be interesting, although I'd put a 1 to 3 seconds delay onto it. You're increasingly focusing your aim to avoid your friends and generally speaking focusing on your targets.
CM was obviously inspired by Starcraft: Ghost opening. At least when marines takes too long to deploy.

+1 This suggestion sounds great! And this one makes even more sense. Well, why +1? Because it's almost impossible to be a marksman when there are 10 marines that you can hit instead of the aliens. But i really doubt this will get in, as i've heard several times from the staff, "The smartgun will be the only gun that ignores FF"

I've made some changes to the sniper rifle so it misses more in close range, which will prevent FF. We'll see how it goes.
