Jaded Sapper Corps. (Squad Engineer Thread)

Post by Edgelord » 18 Jul 2016, 14:03

Welcome fellow masochists who have chosen the Combat Engineer profession!

I am deeply sorry that your IQ was low enough to choose this job, but hey someone's gotta do it and you get to blow shit up. There are a dozen ways to skin a baldie corgi and the same goes for FOBs and defensive emplacements in general. If you're not too busy being shoved into oncoming fire while placing a barricade feel free to post screenshots and stories below detailing your success/failure as a squad engineer, as well as any tips for newcomers.

If you are on high-pop and you alone take ALL of the engineer gear from the machines

I will find you. And I will follow you until you die and loot your corpse. I don't like being reduced to the squad handy-man/light replacer.

One round I wasted all my welding fuel on one table and got so annoyed that the next guy who happened to push me got a face full of slugs, and then I shot myself. Fun round. Just expanding on this, at first all I did was hit him with my welder, then he shot me breaking my chest. Then the rest happened

Right here's an example of what not to do.

So moved on to SL but engineer will always be my fall back/backstory/go to profession. So naturally, as an SL, I lean on my engies pretty heavily.

So poor Delta SL Alice 'La Fayette' Sanders is up on the north shore of the river, alone, with a bunch of stubborn jarheads. I move Bravo up to help. Squad is down to 2 engineers, a medic and myself. We get to hydro, I ask where Sanders is (command sucks this round). While waiting medic gets FF'd. Goes back to Sully. Finally find out where Sanders is. Finally move to reinforce her and help her secure the beach head.

Naturally I am thinking I have two engineers, helping build a base should be a breeze. Get to the outpost, tell them to set up the turret. Both of them stare at me blankly.

Uh oh.

Long story short, they both forgot the turret. Sanders runs back and finds a turret somewhere. Almost get eaten by a Ravager while waiting to get the turret set up. This is about where I find out neither really knows how to engineer. One disappears, assume KIA.

Last one means well, is really trying. We start to retreat, I tell him to break down turret. Sanders and I stall the entire retreat trying to save the turret. Engie is trying his damnest, but gets wounded.

Fuck it I'll do it. Take his screw driver and work my way up to the turret. The 3 guys left lay down beautiful cover fire. Get to turret, reach for the power button....

Sniped in the head by boiler. RIP me. GG.
10/10 would do again.

I haven't played a whole lotta engineer.. I really should dabble in it sometime, fix the fuckin floodlights like you are supposed to and salvage metal like a man instead of being a pussy who cries for more metal when there are domes nearby with 30 racks in em, which when torn apart are worth 30 metal sheets right there mate.

Some engineers are real babies, can't salvage a piece of tissue to wipe their nose...

Yeah but good engineers can really carry a round. Death forts, turrets, mines, all the goodies... God I love engineer.

Tips for the engineers when laying down electric grills: building an electric grill over a solid object that "doesnt" cover the floor tile prevents "bump-shocking" marines who dont know common sense. This works with hidden doors, tables, racks, anything you build that grill over. Building over girders prevents friendly and enemy projectiles from destroying the grill as well, which makes it a slightly more time consuming but alot more useful and effective overall. This doesnt stop the grill from shocking anybody who kicks or punches the grill though, so its still really great.
Gaze upon me,
for I have wandered deep into the ancient tombs of knowledge to which lie madness and sorrow, cleansing a path for all those who walk behind me...

...

But seriously, does uh, anyone know the way out?!

~Furthermore, I consider that Floodlights should no longer be destroyed.~

For engineer weaponry I still maintain that the shotgun is king. The main reason for this is because for one backpack slot you can carry 25 rounds, add this to handfuls stored in your webbing and whatnot and you'll be able to carry a large amount of ammo without expending too much space. I go buckshot but slugs are also effective.

Actually I'm partial to rail scoped DMR pulse rifle. You can support/defend your FoB while still being able to keep an eye on your turret.
Shotgun definitely gets more ammo though, be lucky if I can cram 2 clips in somewhere.

I prefer to go SMG with a handful of mags, simply because combat is secondary to me.

I'd rather put all my focus on building and salvaging then hunting aliens, and I'd rather make sure I have enough room for the more important stuff than ammo. That, and being able to shoot one-handed is a nice thing while I build with another.

It just occurred to me that new engineers would probably find this stuff helpful:
How to build shit:
http://www.ss13.eu/wiki/index.php/Guide_to_construction
Important ones to know:
Tables (they're the barricades)
Girders
Fake walls (doors into fob)

How to hack shit:
http://www.ss13.eu/wiki/index.php/Hacking
Important ones to know:
Vending machines
Doors
Generally how the wires work in ss13 (don't electrocute fellow marines)

viewtopic.php?t=3582
Abbysynth's turret guide, read the whole thing this is your trump card as an engineer and no one likes an engineer who messed up the turret.

Final pointers:
Mines can't blow up when marines step on them, don't be afraid to place them. Remember to cover them, and leave random junk NOT on mines, then watch the alien salt flow.
C4 goes on things, click everything short of the floor to start planting them. 10 seconds is longer than it seems.
Fixing the power station is super easy, examining it tells you the process.
Remember you can multi task! Fix 3 generators, deconstruct multiple tables, repair multiple walls. Less time you spend standing there like alien bait.
