Sulaco Fusion Reactor

Post by Aetsuki » 26 Aug 2016, 06:33

Oh man, hijacking the usual format here for a little bit of a biggy. I've typed up and formatted a document that should show the idea pretty clear cut, if not a little daunting. In the morning I'm going to do some more concept sprites like I did for my Self Destruct suggestion (Which could totally tie into this). For the reason I wrote this... the Supermatter Crystal has always bored me as an energy source. It's some magic death crystal that spews phoron gas like candy and vaporizes anyone who touches it, and of course the quickest way to deal with it overloading is to blow it out of the god damn airlock.

Depletable Components
Phoron Cores - Primary component
Coolant - Coolant, speaks for itself

Serviceable Components
Magnetic Containment Panels - Keeps the superheated phoron from exploding out of the reactor during use.
Phoron Injector - Controls flow of phoron to containment
Laser Focusing Array - excites phoron particles, superheating them for power
Coolant Pipes - More coolant.
EM Circuit Housing - Protects internal circuits from any EM interference.
Radiator Panels - Produces the power, by heat or radioactivity
Internal Wiring - Internal guff
Plating - External guff

Updated Mechanics
Current Control Room will remain mostly as is, with major changes to computer consoles. New consoles will have more intimate control of the reactor, showing alerts if an one of the serviceable components is damaged, and possibly which part specifically. They’ll also control a percentage of phoron injection, laser intensity, display, remaining phoron before the phoron core is spent, emergency cutoff, coolant flow, heat levels, and power production. It sounds a lot more complex, but it allows for a more immersive and interesting reactor.
With the addition of more control over the reactor, subsystems can be damaged. You can increase power output at the requirement of more coolant usage and more heat, causing minor damage to containment panels and radiator panels. The reactor can be overloaded, causing intense subsystem damage and damage to the Sulaco, depending on the heat. Damage to subsystems can snowball, containment panel damage can start to damage pipes and other internal parts, and so on.
This is interchangeable, depending on how much of a pain this might be, but instead of having subsystems repaired by metal and wiring, they would have replacement parts that can be ordered in and have full integrity, replacing the old piece, possibly removing it and leaving an item that could be repaired by an engineer.
Ejecting the core would no longer be viable, being replaced by a cutoff switch that would immediately stop all phoron reactions, though at the cost of damage to subsystems.

Phoron Cores: One should be able to last the round, unless an engineer runs the reactor under heavier stress than it should. Replacements would be orderable from cargo, spent phoron cores are trash. (Maybe refillable?)

Coolant: No need to really explain this. If anyone cares that much, liquid coolant could be a possibility, but I think the current gas coolants would work fine.

Benefits: This would provide a more immersive and lore-friendly reactor, that overall looks and feels more interesting than the supermatter crystal, and provides more benefit and immersion to the control room situated infront of the SM crystal.

Quick bangout of the layout for the reactor.
1 would be coolant systems, the little pipes coming out of them would extend and connect with the reactor unit, with the phoron core slotting into the center at 3 so that it can be seen and give a visual indicator that the reactor is loaded.

Edit: Holy crap the size of that is way more than I care for when I put it directly into the post. Just going to direct link it.

This is a huge undertaking; robusting the SM is not a priority at the moment, so I am going to deny this.
