I mean, the Engineers are sappers. Their whole thing is to cut through enemy fortifications.

According to the lore, flamethrower is the best weapon to deal both with aluems and their organic structures. And because welding tool is flame-based, it should work no less effective than FT on close distance. At least better than an even sharpest knife.
It might be great if it'll be possible to 'unweld' resin stuff by clicking on wall\door\membrane and wait until it collapse similar to how xenos breaking lights or generators being repaired, but simple x2-x3 damage over common knife damage fine too, +1
