Eel infested river
Summary (a quick, 2-3 sentence summary): Have the rivers infested with eels for a set amount of time.
Benefits (How this will benefit the server and game as a whole): It deters Marines from getting too close to the river and not upsetting the aliens. While on the flipside, prevent the marines getting swarmed with space bears while they try to save their captured comrade who is full view.
Details (Description of how you think this would work, the benefits, etc): So, I'm assuming there's a certain time or collection of events in which the Admins decide that is no longer meta for the marines to advance towards the caves and giving them the heads up. It would be handy if they could spawn a bunch of eels, slightly buffed ones I guess, that stay within the water tiles with command having the intel that the river isn't safe to cross yet and that marines should avoid doing so unless they want to get mauled.
Obviously after awhile, the admins would be able to wipe the eels from the river if the marines haven't already burned through their ammo to cross it. Giving a somewhat intuitive green flag for the marines to progress forward. It's a rough idea in which I have no knowledge of coding, but food for thought.
Implementation (Optional, if you have an idea how to implement it):

Hmm. Eels wouldn't be native to LV-624. Maybe add in some chemical spill or something that will deter marines from going over for a set amount of time?

Re: Eel infested river
I mean, I suggest eels mainly because that's what I've been swarmed by when I reluctantly follow my SL to the river and an Admin isn't happy about it. But yeah anything that prevents the cross in my opinion, probably something to stop the Ayys too because I've seen them lurking around the LZ's dropping facehuggers and melting doors aswell as vendors that Marines would use for barricades.

Re: Eel infested river
Linking to this idea could be that the water treatment plant is leaking toxic fluids into the river which makes the river burn marines who go into it.Tristan63 wrote: Maybe add in some chemical spill or something that will deter marines from going over for a set amount of time?
Perhaps needing marines to cross the river to fix the treatment plant? (although this could very well lead to meta camping from the alien chaps, so a set amount of time might be better in this case and when the time is up the water is fine to cross?)

Re: Eel infested river
What if we give the water treatment plant an unslashable apc, and make it so once power is up it treats the water after a certain amount of time passes, and then marines can cross?

I think this is the winning answer right here on how to fix the river issue.InterroLouis wrote:What if we give the water treatment plant an unslashable apc, and make it so once power is up it treats the water after a certain amount of time passes, and then marines can cross?

Re: Eel infested river
-1, don't attack marines and pull out directly across the river. Alternatively, marine engineers can build a bridge to nullify this.

Re: Eel infested river
If you're thinking of the trick where you build a wall on a river tile and then deconstruct said wall to produce a normal tile without the river state or sprite, I'm fairly certain it can't be done anymore.completelynewguy wrote:Alternatively, marine engineers can build a bridge to nullify this.

All joking aside this sounds pretty slick

Re: Eel infested river
+1
I like the idea of a water treatment plant that has to be fixed. Gives another objective for the engineers to complete in order to defeat the aliens. It could be added into the intel report at the beginning that scanners have detected a chemical spill into the river. As for the river I don't think it should be instakill or anything, but you should take toxin and/or burn damage while crossing it. That way survivors can still cross the river if they want to go mine a tunnel to hide in, as well as it prevents marines from dying immediately if they are dragged off by the xenos to the caves early on. This also gives the marines a few options on how to deal with the situation. They can fix the treatment plant, build a bridge, or risk wading the river and taking moderate damage to get to the other side.
I think that any feature that makes the rules enforce themselves is a fantastic idea. It leads to more natural gameplay and gives the admins less of a headache.

Re: Eel infested river
Very heavy +1 to the water treatment/chemical spill idea. Giving more objectives for the marines rather than "go down, look around, maybe fix power if you feel like it, shooty killy" is pretty good in my eyes- and in this case, it doubles as that as well as a reasonable method of pausing the marine advance in both IC and OOC manners. I believe the chemicals should be enough to, after a full wade across, require medical attention but not too much that they would not be able to make it back upon realizing they have made a terrible mistake. If the engineering squad idea ever comes through, this would give them another area to focus their efforts on besides the very brief repair of power and maintenance of the FOB. Unless the OP is committed to their eel idea, I might recommend they strike-through their original suggestion and perhaps rewrite in this direction.
