I am just so bad at this game, I can do most of the things but when it comes to things like levers, bridges, advanced traps, burrows, pumps, patrol routes, and a few functions of the military I can't seem to figure it out.

Make shit hit the fan artificially. Either use DFhack to make a massive invasion, or do something rad and dangerous you wouldn't normally do.

I near always play adventure mode. Going around, recruiting men, them getting their spines cut, and then becoming master biters who decapitate and *eviscerates* peoples chest cavity in one hit.
Becoming a dark creature is even better, going full sprint everywhere and just having double 'Supreme strength' and a iron battleaxe, decapitating and chopping off limbs everywhere.

Download Lazy Newb Pack and increase max invaders. So you have bigger invasions from goblins. Those are usually the most fun for me.

Also I started playing with Masterwork. Its pretty fun.

Masterwork is almost essential. I have a certain love for Orcs and Humans with that mod.

I thought my miner dwarf could outrun the magma. I was so, so wrong.

Then I thought that my mason dwarf would have enough sense to block the tunnel from the outside. I was also wrong.

i made a big fortress when a forgotten beast come from my cave and kill my army and the most of the survivors, then she died in the up/down stairs because she lost a lot of blood,when the war was finished all my dwarfs died because they were starving

Its a fun game, but I usually set the settings as high as possible (difficulty wise) just so I don't get 100's of dwarfs.

Im good at managing 20-30 dwarfs at best, but when you get more then that, it becomes a hassle to manage them, hence I just make it a survival of the fittest and throw my dwarfs through a gauntlet goblins, zombies, and the biome I am in (either tundra or evil to cut down on their numbers).

Works for me.
