Battalion

Post by DeadLantern » 11 Nov 2016, 21:11

As we go into LV-624 or whatever, all we know is that we are in the marine Corps.

We have no info on our battalion or platoon.

Honestly, I don't think we should be considered marines. The USMC Marines Deployed in Aliens are quite different from us, we should be considered the ARMY doing a simple rescue mission. The Marines would be sent first in this situation, but it could also be inferred that are Army regiment was the closest battalion.

Honesty, we should not be the Unamed Battalion Marines, we should be the 75th Rangers, in the army.

But for the time being, what battalion are we in right now?

You know, I think it would be nice to have a more proper name for our gang of merry mental cases..

Maybe Apop might know the real name of our platoon or battalion? Or are we a company? I dunno, I feel like we are bigger than a platoon.

We're a platoon unless we get 100 marines, then we're a company.

And the Colonial Marines don't work as any modern era armed forces.

Right. From what I've been informed and deduced, we are the 2nd Battalion of the 7th Marine Regiment within the 1st Marine Division. On a MAGTF level we are the 2nd Battalion Landing Team, 7th Marines as the Ground Combat Element (GCE) of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit.

We're a platoon, first of all. A platoon consists of squads, a battalion consists of companies which consist of platoons. The sheer size of the Sulaco marine forces is simply too small to be considered a battalion, but for roleplay purposes, we are the 2nd Battalion 9th Regiment.

Regardless, we're nowhere close to the actual army. The army's purpose is to defend compouds, contruct bases and police areas. The Marine Force is used as a spearhead, they do majority of the fighting today alongside special forces. Now, as Colonial Marines, we're basically the same shit, except we have no Army to hunker down for us, we have Colonial Militias and Colonial Guards, but we still act as that main fighting force for Colonies. Simply put, we physically cannot be the 75th rangers, and the way we act, the ranks we have and the uniforms and purpose we serve do not fit the category.

I understand this. At peak population we're barely a company's strength.

And yeah. The purpose of a Marine Corps is to take post on Navy vessels and protect them, while also fufilling the role of a dedicated amphibious (or in this case orbital) landing force.

There actually WAS a discussion tangent to this, back back back then.

Might be related.

The Special Forces mission is a mission of force multiplying; they go in to foreign countries and train the locals, earn support, or in some other way interact with the indigenous population. Not a whole lot of room for an 18 year old kid who thinks he's a hot shit trigger puller there. The Army and Marines are both occupational and raid forces, anyone who tells you that the Marine Corp is too small to sit on an FOB all day is either a recruiter for the Marines, a civilian, or someone who ate too many crayons while they were in.

Nowadays on high pop, each squad is large enough to be a platoon itself, and the four squads collectively a company. I don't think it will ever be possible to have a whole batallion active at one time though haha

I feel like adding...

Ok, so lets assume a Battalion is around 400 marines.
The Almayer is from what I understand the flagship of the 2nd Battalion of 4th Brigade of the USCM "Falling Falcons". While it COULD hold a whole battalion in Cryostorage I think a more game relevant thought to it would be that the Almayer has a detachment of marines and crew, say around 100-200 plus while the remaining 200-300 or so are stationed on various colonies and outposts in the sector.

After all, the marines of the "Falling Falcons", much like their predecessors the "Dust Raiders", are there to reestablish United Americas (UAS) control over the sector. It'd be rather hard to do that if you don't have a ground, or in this case planetary, presence on major colonies.
